The job:
You've read about the challenges of scaling rails, and doing it successfully requires a lot of infrastructure behind the scenes. Some of the back-end components we’ve written are: our own search engine library to search the largest text corpus on the internet; a fuzzy text-matching system that can identify similar blocks of text; an API that’s depended on by thousands of businesses; and a document conversion system that runs on a dynamically scalable grid of over 1,000 Amazon EC2 nodes. I am looking for a quote for the following items:
Hi,
I am Executive Director at a small non profit and I need to find
someone to help continue to build DisabledCommunity.Org.
I had been working with a volunteer Ruby Programmer, but he moved to
Colorado to pursue other work.
I do not want to move the code we have
or that you develop to another server.I want to continue to use the same
code that I currently have and build on to what we already have
completed.
Here is what I visualize to be the scope of the project:
1. Ensure home page appears
exactly the same whether using:
PC or Apple Platforms,
Internet Explorer or Firefox or whether
using a pda, or a 15 inch, 17 inch or 19 inch monitor.
2. Relocate "Skip Navigation"
Skip Navigation button to bottom
of page below ADMIN link,
but still keep it as the first line of text on home page for blind or
vision impaired users using screen readers to be able to "read it first". Add an explanation of function if link is clicked so other users will know what the feature does.
3. Make PDA categories look the same as on a PC. When viewing home page on PDA the primary categories are not bolded as
they are on laptop or desktop PC
Subcategory Pages:
4. Fix subject categories. After clicking on category, you are taken to a
list of links at a 2nd level down view. This page lists all the subcategories and all the links from the categories. The subject categories also need to be added to this list of links with links indented after each category is listed. Currently, the links are listed without distinction as to what category the links are from.
5. Create a search box that will be placed on DisabledCommunity.Org which will search any of the pages on the website including the database and will return a results page similar to the
one called LibraryFind. Try a search at
http://search.library.oregonstate.edu/record/search. The advanced search feature is not needed at this time. In addition to the results of the search being displayed, I am also especially interested in the
"refine results" section on the return search screen. (I would also
like for the user to be able to be able to choose a short, medium and
long format for their results, which is described more fully below).
6. Results / Report / Display Descriptions:
Create ability for user to choose short, medium long view of disability resources page. Currently the view depends upon how much information has been typed into resource database record. Is it possible for user's choice to remain the same even after exiting browser and returning for another visit? I would like to allow this function without the need for user registration (at this point) and also allow for a user to choose a default in their preferences
7. Remove SF from SF neighborhood as a display option. When a website has organizational content available the results are printed on the screen when the organization's name has been chosen.
Currently SF neighborhood is an option which is chosen and this. To
see example of this go to:
http://www.disabledcommunity.thermmed.com/listings/2006. I would like to keep Neighborhood for later Google Maps function, but we need to lose the SF.
8. Description: User Admin Functions
a) Add ability in ADMIN for Administrator to view web statistics such as number of
user visits on homepage and subcategory pages. It would be great also to see the paths that users are using and searches that people are making without indicating the user making them.
b)Add dead link management function to Admin- Add function for checking
for error messages for dead links and the ability to correct or delete
links within the current ADMIN feature. I have checked out both Xenu
and other open source dead link managers and they all seem to work
partially except they show a number that has been assigned to each
link as a unique identifier instead of the actual link that is dead
for example I need it to show the link
http://www.disabledcommunity.thermmed.com/browse/assistive_technology/accessibility/ada.org
or somehow to allow for me to understand what each number is affixed
to each link and to easily fix or delete the problems.
c) DCO Bookmarklet is a current feature under the ADMIN Function, but
when it is added to some browsers, and not to other browsers. I need
to understand how to make this work on all browsers or knowledge as to why it works on some and not on others. Also, when using DCO Booklet, it would be nice if the layout was slightly different with website URL moved to top as well as choosing which category to save to. Additionally, it is a little difficult to read the category choices, enlarge font and indent subcategories more.
d)Add user profile with password protection to make it possible for others to add resources.
Currently it is possible to add resources using ADMIN DCO Bookmarklet, but this exists but only for one user and password.
Description: User Admin Functions
Add the ability within ADMIN to add banner advertisements on each page
of website.
There are many low cost and free scripts
that have been created already for this purpose. This may be something that you can do on your own but I do
not want to reinvent the wheel. An open source script can be integrated into project.
Let me know how much you would charge for this project and how long it
would take you to complete it.
Sincerely,
--

TeleGeography, a successful boutique telecom research and consulting firm, is seeking a web developer to complement a small flexible team of designers and programmers in creating a growing portfolio of web-services and reports. To be part of the team, you must demonstrate experience in the following areas:
- Ruby
- web standards-compliant HTML and CSS
- Javascript (using frameworks like Prototype)
- SQL
- behavior/test driven development
- version control systems (especially Subversion and Mercurial)
- UNIX
In addition to the above technical skills, the following experience will put you ahead of other candidates:
- project management or supervisory experience
- data visualization software experience including Flash
- understanding of telecom networks
TeleGeography is known for its data-driven research and its maps of telecommunications networks. Our systems & design team creates the applications that capture, analyze and publish this data as online reports and databases.
Turning raw data into a cogent analytical report is a multi-step process, and the systems & design team plays a part in each step of the way:
Collecting the Data
Extensive data sets form the foundation of TeleGeography’s analysis and separates the company from its competitors that rely on smaller data samples. Most of the data are collected by the research team through traditional methods (for example, telephone interviews). However, the systems & design team also plays a role. To supplement our data on Internet backbone market size, for example, the systems & design team designed a tool (called “RouteWalker”) which generates traceroutes to known destinations worldwide. The data returned by RouteWalker is stored, parsed and compared to data collected through surveys filled in by Internet backbone providers.
Publishing the Data
By extending the Radiant content management system, we’ve made it possible for TeleGeography’s research team to publish their reports with little or no assistance from the systems & design team. The CMS has been customized to handle unstructured content in the form of analysis prose and accompanying figures and tables as well as structured, data-heavy content. The latter relies on ETL schemes and JSON files to transform data collected into meaningful content. With this foundation the team is building more creative extensions and applying the framework on other content such as the those found on our public-facing site.
Visualizing the Data
We believe in the power of well-executed information graphics. We take pride in finding simple visual expressions that clarify complex ideas. Our Internet backbone data, like other datasets at TeleGeography, are carefully interpreted into unique information graphics and rich wall maps that help to explain the complex datasets. We are now looking to take the next step and take our infographics expertise into a more software-driven and interactive direction.
TeleGeography offers a competitive salary, great benefits, an outstanding K Street location, and an environment focused on results and quality in a casual atmosphere. If this sounds like the place for you, please send us your resume and cover letter (PDF, PS, or text preferred) to recruitment@telegeography.com.
No phone calls, please.
