It's the time of year that things get done. Labor Day through Thanksgiving is the longest uninterrupted period of focused activity each year. We've found that in each of our various businesses, activities happen quicker, projects launch faster, and the overall energy of coworkers and clients is at its peak.
Why is this the case? Folks are rested and relaxed having most likely taken some time off during the summer. Even if they didn't, coworkers and clients likely did, lightening the workload. After Labor Day, the world resumes its normal circadian rhythm--kids are in school, the days are of normal length (neither tempting with their longness nor depressing in their darkness), and people are ready to implement and innovate all the ideas that have spent a summer at the beach gestating in idle minds.
It's a brief, nearly three month stretch, that goes by quickly each year. This productivity comes screeching to a halt at Thanksgiving, after which we all start hearing familiar lines that sound alike and mean the same thing, "let's revisit this after the first."
Some would argue that January through Memorial Day is a longer stretch, but we don't believe this to be true. In January people are afflicted by varying degrees of cold, wet, dark weather, debt or stress hangover from the holidays, along with the knowledge that if the groundhog sees its shadow, Spring's arrival is still a long way away. And, December is not often considered a relaxing month and likely has the opposite effect on January as the dog days of August have on September. Of course once Memorial Day arrives folks start to haphazardly scatter, and productivity is measured at best for the rest of the summer.
So, as we return to work after Labor Day our advice is simple: Carpe Diem! Now is the time to do it! 'It' could be launching a new project, expanding your venture, or setting yourself on a new career path.
If you're interested in evaluating new opportunities in the Ruby on Rails community, there is never a better time of year. Companies ramp up their hiring immediately after Labor Day so the opportunities are freshest. Management is back at work, meaning the interview process moves quicker. And optimism is high, reinvigorated by summer holidays, translating into higher compensation.
So, if you're looking for a change, or would even be open to checking out what's out there, dust off your resume, post your latest code to github, and give us a shout. Fall is here and your new Rails job is waiting!
