An article in The New York Times this week highlighted New York as a "hotbed of innovation," stressing, in particular, the recent growth and promise of NYC's tech sector. It seemed to be destiny, then, that we picked New York as this week's Rails City of the Week.

If you haven't already read the article, it's worth checking out as much of what's going on in the NYC tech sector as a whole is reflected in the NYC Ruby world as well. The article also provides some interesting insight into the differences between New York and Silicon Valley (and why more and more technologists are finding the Big Apple appealing).

But you're not here to read about general tech news. So on with the (Ruby) show! Here are a few quick notes about the New York Ruby on Rails job market from our experience over the last three years:

New York Rails gigs offer competitive compensation, second only to the San Francisco Bay Area. New York and San Francisco are the biggest Rails markets in the country, and so it makes sense that many of the best Rails shops and developers flock to these cities bringing with them the highest salaries in the industry.

New York Rails gigs are more often creative and media ventures. The types of Rails gigs found in NYC are a reflection of the big industries that call NYC home; publishing, fashion, and finance to name a few.

New York Rails startups are typically well-funded. With Wall Street just around the corner, it's not surprising that startups in New York are generally well-funded. Venture Capitalists in New York and around the country always have an eye out for promising investment opportunities in the city.

These are the main trends we've noticed in New York over the last three years. Even during the recession, New York has been relatively stable with (at least some) Rails openings available throughout all of 2009. Now that 2010 has hit, the NYC Rails scene is back in a serious way. We have more Rails openings in NYC now than we've had since 2008.

As you'd expect, NYC has active Ruby and Ruby on Rails meetups (with 400+ and 700+ active members, respectively). The even larger (12,000+ members) NY Tech Meetup gathers investors, entrepreneurs, and developers and fuels New York's ecosystem of tech ventures.

But what is living in NYC like beyond the Rails world? Well, you probably already know that New York tops many lists as the most expensive city in the country. But if you're able to take advantage of the competitive compensation Rails gigs in the city tend to offer, you may be able to stand that. New York's public transportation system is very accessible although New Yorkers also have the longest commute to work than any other city in the nation.

If you can make the logistics work, living in New York provides access to some of the best restaurants, inspiring artwork, and unparalleled cultural diversity. For these reasons and more, many people consider New York one of the most desirable places to live (at least for a period of time).

If you're still not sure if New York is for you, you can always check out the "Do You Belong in New York?" quiz. But really, if you're interested in New York Rails gigs, now is a good time to take a look. Whether you're in New York already or looking to relocate, our latest Rails gigs in NYC are worth checking out.

Work on a small team in San Francisco doing Extreme Programming at a fast-paced yet sustainable pace. Weekly iterations and retrospectives, daily standup meetings, a test-driven codebase, pair programming... yes, it's all real.

We need smart, creative, enthusiastic coders with Ruby skills or a great deal of Ruby aptitude. Want to share your knowledge while learning from others? Want to make a solid design contribution to a nascent application, while still drawing a salary? Know any of the following skills, and want to learn the rest? Give us a buzz.

We are looking for a part-time system administrator for 2-3 hours a week. We are moving from Slicehost to Amazon AWS / EC2.

We especially need someone who knows EC2’s auto-scaling and ELB load-balancing. Or who has existing auto scripts (or can quickly do them) to bring up and take down EC2 instances based on traffic needs.

We have about 90% of it figured out, and we need about 6 to 10 hours of help in the next week or two with the remaining 10%. Then we need about 2-3 hours per week on average of ongoing system admin after that.

Our first Web site is below, and most of the initial time would be on this -

http://dailysource.org/

The site’s mission is to bring high-quality news and information from around the Internet to the public in order to help them and the world. You can read more about it here -

http://dailysource.org/about/site
http://dailysource.org/about/benefits

We are also starting a new site whose focus is on helping the people in the world in the greatest need, especially the 2 billion extremely poor in Africa, Asia and Latin America who are trying to live on less than $2 a day:

http://leastof.org/about/intro
http://www.leastof.org/
http://leastof.org/about/samplepages

Check out the innovative World Wealth Calculator on the front page, that the top economist at the World Bank volunteered to help us create.

We developed DailySource using Ruby on Rails, MySQL, and a good amount of AJAX. We are getting ready to switch from MyISAM vs. InnoDB.

We are looking for someone who can do under $20 an hour, preferably under $15.

INFORMATION WE NEED

If you think you might be interested in these, please email the following to: systemadmin (at) dailysource (dot) org:

* Your resume (or the equivalent information such as work experience and skills, or curriculum vitae). In particular, let us know your skill level in EC2 overall, in ELB and in AWS’ auto-scaling; and the number of sites you've worked on using those.
* How much you would charge per hour to work on our project. We are a nonprofit and do not have a large budget.
* If you are also a Web developer who knows Ruby on Rails, let us know and we will consider having you do some development work as well.
* If English is not your native tongue, please let us know the levels of your written and verbal English.

We are forward thinking and passionate about making the world a better place — particularly for those most in need.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Sparkart isn’t a design firm. It’s like one in some ways, but we’re deeply interested in technology and business on top of the pretty pictures. In fact, we also develop software. Visit any of our sites and you’ll be using the most advanced content, community, and commerce-driven site development platform in the world. Think Drupal, Ning, WordPress, ExpressionEngine, Magento, etc. all rolled into one powerful RoR platform with Apple-like attention to detail and design and over a million users. We’ve built it over the years to empower our clients to do all sorts of things. Check out our sites to get an idea.

We’re working hard this year to turn our platform into a hosted service product and we need help. We’re looking to form a tight 2 person design/build team to accomplish this mission with the support of a very talented team of software engineers. You will hit the ground running:

Defining new features on your own initiative and in reaction to business requirements, writing specifications and building HTML/CSS/Javascript prototypes

Helping to refactor our front end codebase to scale better as we add features

Partnering with our User Experience team to constantly improve our production process, defining rapid development methodologies such as patterns and templates

Providing support internally to our largest customer: Sparkart

Potentially helping develop a better Ruby-based templating system

Sparkart has been in business since 1999 with the resources to execute and the agility of a bedroom business. Join us and we’ll create something very special together.

YOU:

Have extensive experience with freelance/open source projects, or are otherwise able to prove a fiercely independent spirit while still respecting the benefits of full time, dedicated employment

Ideally have experience working with lifestyle brands via the worlds of advertising, publishing, broadcast media, gaming, or related industries

Demonstrate strong ability in typography, layout, and UI/UX

Have 5+ years of experience with web standards based development

Have 2+ years of experience with Javascript (jQuery preferred)

Bonus points for Ruby on Rails experience

PERKS:

Sparkart is conveniently located in Uptown Oakland, just a block away from the 19th St. BART station (13 minutes from Downtown San Francisco) and 3 blocks from Lake Merritt. Multiple freeways converge nearby and garage/lot parking is plentiful.

If you email us, it’s important to provide the information listed in the “Information we need” section below. If you have applied with us in the past, you are very welcome to apply for this. We are a small nonprofit organization and we were not able to reply to all of the applicants for our past openings. We are happy to consider you for this position.

EXISTING SITE

Our first Web site is below, and most of the first two months would probably be spent helping with it - mostly implementing new features, and doing some refactoring/optimization in some areas:

http://dailysource.org/

The site’s mission is to bring high-quality news and information from around the Internet to the public. You can read more about it here -

http://dailysource.org/about/site
http://dailysource.org/about/benefits

The site was chosen by PBS’ Media Shift blog as a top 5 trend to watch. We have some top journalists in the U.S. working and/or volunteering for us including; Laura Noueihed, who was the chief editor in charge of the night editions of the front page of the New York Times' Web site in the past; Vince Winkel, who has won 20 awards for excellence in journalism while working for places like CBS, NPR, CNN, and the BBC and who is the former operating editor of monitor.org; and Lynne Adams who headed up a 30 person division at the BBC covering international and national stories for their Web site and mobile platforms.

NEW SITE

This is the project you’ll be working on about 90% of the time after the first two months. Its focus is on helping the people in the world in the greatest need, especially the 2 billion extremely poor in Africa, Asia and Latin America who are trying to live on less than $2 a day:

http://leastof.org/about/intro
http://www.leastof.org/
http://leastof.org/about/samplepages

Check out the innovative World Wealth Calculator on the front page, that the top economist at the World Bank volunteered to help us create.

We are very excited about LeastOf.org and have received an extremely positive response to it so far. While we are on a somewhat small budget at the moment, we expect the site to eventually have tens of thousands of users and believe it will be a feather in the cap of whoever develops it. It will be a great portfolio builder and excellent basis for references. We are looking to make a big impact on the world with this project.

We developed DailySource using Ruby on Rails, MySQL, and a good amount of AJAX - and are looking to do the same with LeastOf.org.

INFORMATION WE NEED:

If you think you might be interested in these, please email the following to: developer (at) dailysource (dot) org:

* Your resume (or the equivalent information such as work experience and skills, or curriculum vitae)
* The number of hours per week you are available. We prefer 30 to 45, and will consider as low as 15 a week.
* How much you would charge per hour to work on these. Again, we are a nonprofit and do not have a large budget. In the past we’ve paid $10-$17 but we might be able to go a little higher depending on the candidate.
* If English is not your native tongue, please let us know the levels of your written and verbal English.

THE ROLE:

Telecommuting from anywhere in the world is possible. The times of day you do the work are totally flexible, though finding times 1-2 days a week to talk briefly via IM will be important.

The types of things we need done are -

* Helping design the architecture of the site
* Writing the code for the core functionality and features
* Ideally some systems admin work, and at the very least helping get the site back up if it’s down. Our current developer does some systems admin work, and we likely will have a very part-time sys admin to help us. If you’re good at sys admins, especially AWS’ Ec2, it’s a plus.
* Once the site is live - some occasional (about once a week) technical support mostly through email for our users.

We are forward-thinking and passionate about making the world a better place - particularly for those most in need.

We look forward to hearing from you,

•	Zealous about design, from clean UI to optimized UX.
•	Familiar with a broad range of technology stacks.
•	Formally qualified with a BS or greater in EE or CS and 5+ years of development experience.
•	Local Boston candidates only. This role does not offer relocation assistance.

Is this role not for you? Please let us know about others that may be interested in this opportunity – you may be eligible for the DL non-employee referral reward. Digital Lumens will not accept unsolicited resumes from placement agencies or recruiters.

We are a stealth, angel funded startup building a first-of-its-kind web and Facebook App. We are a cutting-edge technology company founded by 4 experienced entrepreneurs: 3 ex-Googlers + 1 of the original developers for eBay.

We are looking for a seasoned software engineer who can take our Facebook application, built in Ruby on Rails, to the next level and be part of the founding team of what could be the next big idea to hit Silicon Valley!

We currently work out of the Dogpatch Labs on Pier 38 in San Francisco. This is a fun, energetic incubation space for us to refine our prototype. We will look for long-term office space later this summer either in SF or on the Peninsula based on team preferences.
