Sparkart isn’t a design firm. It’s like one in some ways, but we’re deeply interested in technology and business on top of the pretty pictures. In fact, we also develop software. Visit any of our sites and you’ll be using the most advanced content, community, and commerce-driven site development platform in the world. Think Drupal, Ning, WordPress, ExpressionEngine, Magento, etc. all rolled into one powerful RoR platform with Apple-like attention to detail and design and over a million users. We’ve built it over the years to empower our clients to do all sorts of things. Check out our sites to get an idea.
We’re working hard this year to turn our platform into a hosted service product and we need help. We’re looking to form a tight 2 person design/build team to accomplish this mission with the support of a very talented team of software engineers. You will hit the ground running:
- Defining new features on your own initiative and in reaction to business requirements, writing specifications and building HTML/CSS/Javascript prototypes
- Helping to refactor our front end codebase to scale better as we add features
- Partnering with our User Experience team to constantly improve our production process, defining rapid development methodologies such as patterns and templates
- Providing support internally to our largest customer: Sparkart
- Potentially helping develop a better Ruby-based templating system
Sparkart has been in business since 1999 with the resources to execute and the agility of a bedroom business. Join us and we’ll create something very special together.
YOU:
- Are naturally curious, highly organized, and love problem solving
- Have extensive experience with freelance/open source projects, or are otherwise able to prove a fiercely independent spirit while still respecting the benefits of full time, dedicated employment
- Ideally have experience working with lifestyle brands via the worlds of advertising, publishing, broadcast media, gaming, or related industries
- Demonstrate strong ability in typography, layout, and UI/UX
- Have 5+ years of experience with web standards based development
- Have 2+ years of experience with Javascript (jQuery preferred)
- Bonus points for Ruby on Rails experience
- Live in the San Francisco Bay Area, or are willing to relocate within 2 months
PERKS:
Sparkart is conveniently located in Uptown Oakland, just a block away from the 19th St. BART station (13 minutes from Downtown San Francisco) and 3 blocks from Lake Merritt. Multiple freeways converge nearby and garage/lot parking is plentiful.
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- Flexible schedule: exact work hours are lenient – just get the work done
- Flexible workplace: work outside of the office from time to time
- Tickets to select client events
- Great people with tons of knowledge about World of Warcraft, Swedish Metal, old Country Blues, German Techno, Cuban Coffee, Nikko Bellic, Vegan Soul Food, Red Skull, and much more!
- We no longer support Internet Explorer 6
APPLY:
Send us an e-mail with the following:
- Resume/CV
- Salary Requirements
- URLs to serve as code samples for markup, CSS, and Javascript
- URLs, or samples in JPEG/PDF format demonstrating visual design and/or UI/UX

We are looking for a part-time system administrator for 2-3 hours a week. We are moving from Slicehost to Amazon AWS / EC2.
We especially need someone who knows EC2’s auto-scaling and ELB load-balancing. Or who has existing auto scripts (or can quickly do them) to bring up and take down EC2 instances based on traffic needs.
We have about 90% of it figured out, and we need about 6 to 10 hours of help in the next week or two with the remaining 10%. Then we need about 2-3 hours per week on average of ongoing system admin after that.
Our first Web site is below, and most of the initial time would be on this -
The site’s mission is to bring high-quality news and information from around the Internet to the public in order to help them and the world. You can read more about it here -
http://dailysource.org/about/site
http://dailysource.org/about/benefits
We are also starting a new site whose focus is on helping the people in the world in the greatest need, especially the 2 billion extremely poor in Africa, Asia and Latin America who are trying to live on less than $2 a day:
http://leastof.org/about/intro
http://www.leastof.org/
http://leastof.org/about/samplepages
Check out the innovative World Wealth Calculator on the front page, that the top economist at the World Bank volunteered to help us create.
We developed DailySource using Ruby on Rails, MySQL, and a good amount of AJAX. We are getting ready to switch from MyISAM vs. InnoDB.
We are looking for someone who can do under $20 an hour, preferably under $15.
INFORMATION WE NEED
If you think you might be interested in these, please email the following to: systemadmin (at) dailysource (dot) org:
* Your resume (or the equivalent information such as work experience and skills, or curriculum vitae). In particular, let us know your skill level in EC2 overall, in ELB and in AWS’ auto-scaling; and the number of sites you've worked on using those.
* How much you would charge per hour to work on our project. We are a nonprofit and do not have a large budget.
* If you are also a Web developer who knows Ruby on Rails, let us know and we will consider having you do some development work as well.
* If English is not your native tongue, please let us know the levels of your written and verbal English.
We are forward thinking and passionate about making the world a better place — particularly for those most in need.
We look forward to hearing from you,

We are very excited about LeastOf.org and have received an extremely positive response to it so far. While we are on a somewhat small budget at the moment, we expect the site to eventually have tens of thousands of users and believe it will be a feather in the cap of whoever develops it. The types of things we need done are -
* Helping design the architecture of the site
* Writing the code for the core functionality and features
* Ideally some systems admin work, and at the very least helping get the site back up if it’s down. Our current developer does some systems admin work, and we likely will have a very part-time sys admin to help us. If you’re good at sys admins, especially AWS’ Ec2, it’s a plus.
* Once the site is live - some occasional (about once a week) technical support mostly through email for our users.

* How much you would charge per hour to work on these. Again, we are a nonprofit and do not have a large budget. In the past we’ve paid $10-$17 but we might be able to go a little higher depending on the candidate.
* If English is not your native tongue, please let us know the levels of your written and verbal English.
THE ROLE:
Telecommuting from anywhere in the world is possible. The times of day you do the work are totally flexible, though finding times 1-2 days a week to talk briefly via IM will be important.
We are forward-thinking and passionate about making the world a better place - particularly for those most in need.
We look forward to hearing from you,
Rachel

Yammer is revolutionizing the way employees communicate, collaborate, and share. Yammer launched at TechCrunch 50 in 2008, where we took home the top prize. Just a year later, more than 50,000 companies are using Yammer to improve workforce productivity.
We're led by David Sacks, an early member of the PayPal leadership team and enjoy all the classic benefits of a start up, with one advantage:
We began with a business plan, and it's working. We're located in a terrific office in San Francisco's SoMa district and offer competitive compensation and benefits.
Yammer was developed by a small team of skilled engineers. We love what we do and we do it very well.
Being part of a small team means that each engineer plays a role in design, architecture and development; you won't be handed a 50-page technical spec and sent off into the corner to insert tab A into slot B.
What we use:
* Ruby on Rails
* Apache + Passenger
* PostgreSQL
* XMPP (ejabberd)
* Message queues (starling RabbitMQ)
* Full text search Engine
* Git
What you'll do:
* Help design and architect new features
* Argue about the right way to do things
* Work closely with others to help develop features
* Take ownership and help test, release and maintain the code you write
* Research new technologies that will help Yammer remain competitive
If you love to learn new technologies and love programming, but hate bosses that do not understand what you do or why it is important to do things the right way, then you may be right for Yammer.
